Eight months ago I moved to Hanoi, Vietnam. I found a nice room in a beautiful house in a district on the lake, though without knowing I had also tripped and fallen into an expat bubble. In this video, I show you the house I live in, talk about what I pay in rent as well as average rents in the city, and also discuss some of the reasons why you may NOT want to move to Tay Ho. Note that the prices that I quote are for the type of living arrangements your standard twenty-something would look for. They are not scraping the bottom of the barrel, but neither are they for serviced apartments with certain amenities. They're also likely to change; Hanoi is undergoing a massive construction boom that's happening alongside quick inflation. Whether or not rents increase in the same way that you see ...

Now entering its fourth year, construction of the Saigon Metro system is chugging along. With several lines in development and plenty of work still to go, Saigoneer takes a closer look at the progress of the city’s first new rail system in nearly a century. Last March, the city’s railway authority displayed both a train carriage and cabin in District 9, inviting residents to give feedback on the design. Based upon the public's response, railway officials gave Hitachi the go-ahead to complete a full order of the blue-and-white cars, whose colors “create a feeling of youthfulness, strength and comfort”, according to a Tuoi Tre article published in February of last year. When put into operation, each train will consist of a cabin and two carriages, creating 61.5-meter-long trains which will each be powered by a 380V three-phase electric engine. In this configuration, each train can carry 930 passengers at a speed of 110 kph on the above-ground section (17.1 kilometers) of the line and 80 kph on the underground segment (2.6 kilometers), making a full trip along the line 30 minutes. Though its initial plans gave metro developers a budget of US$1.4 billion for Line 1, this figure later ballooned to US$2.49 billion for the first metro route alone. City officials have pointed to design adjustments, higher wages and fluctuations in material and fuel prices as culprits for the higher price tag, all of which could continue to raise the project cost in future. Beyond Line 1, the municipal government also submitted its proposal for Line 5 to the National Assembly in October of last year with a requested budget of US$4.47 billion. While official development assistance from the Japanese government will cover US$2.2 billion of Line 1's cost, with the remainder of the project paid for by the city government, this may not be the route’s final price tag as there have been proposals to add extensions to Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Dong Nai.

The city became the capital of French Indo China. The lake is surrounded by splendid old villas and public buildings. In the early morning several of the city’s inhabitants arrive to go about their traditional exercises. The Chua Mot Cot Pagoda is one of the oldest religious buildings in Hanoi, a temple built upon a single column in the centre of a small pond. Legend has it that the childless king, Ly Thai To, saw the goddess of mercy in a dream in which she presented him with a son. Soon afterwards an heir to the throne was born and thus the king ordered the construction of this pagoda and the future of the dynasty was assured. Den Dao Quan is one of the most beautiful Taoist temples in Vietnam and is located close to the national library south east of the Temple Of Literature. Inaugurated in 1993, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is one of the finest examples of its kind in Vietnam and is so popular that its twice daily performances are completely sold out. Den Quan Than is the richly adorned Temple Of The Great God that dates back to the 11th century and is dedicated to the Vietnamese god of war. Than Vu, who is also the patron saint of the north, has guarded the city for thousands of years. His temple is located on the banks of Lake West. Over the centuries Hanoi has frequently been conquered, lost its status as a capital city and also changed its name several times. But it has survived and is still full of timeless charm. It is most assuredly the pearl of North Vietnam!

The French Quarter in Hanoi is known for its boulevards, parks and magnificent buildings. Many of them date from the colonial era and the French architecture dominates the streetscape. It lies east of the Hoan Kiem Lake. We start in the Ly Thai To road and go south. The Hanoi Guesthouse (Golden Time Hostel) catches our eyes. The pretty house captivates with its balconies and wrought-iron balcony railings. Even from a distance, we can see the high-rise building of Vietcombank. The flat building in front of it is the State Bank of Vietnam. Between the Ly Thai Ho and the Hoan Kiem Lake is the Ly Thai To Park, with the statue of the first emperor of the Ly Dynasty. In 1009, he came to power and moved the capital of Vietnam Hoa Lư to Hanoi. We turn in the Ngo Quyen road and stand in front of the building of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, a former French colonial building. On the other side of the road is a small park, the Vườn hoa Con Coc (flower garden). In the middle of the park you see a column that contains the relics of Jean Laurent Chavassieux Léon. He was Governor-General of Indochina in 1884. We observe a street vendor for a little while. Then we pass the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel, one of the most prestigious hotels in Hanoi. Two historical Citroëns, year of construction 1956 and 1953, are parked in front of the door. We turn left into the Trang Tien road and reach the Hotel de l'Opera Hanoi, also a well respected hotel. Restaurants, bars and clubs are located in it in a lovely building next door. The opera then lies in front of us. It was built in 1911 by the French colonial administration. It has its own orchestra, which competes with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanoi Conservatory. Originally French and Italian operas were performed here. After the withdrawal of the French, the Opera House was used for Vietnamese plays and musicals. By 1960, Western opera returned again but also numerous premieres of Vietnamese operas take place. Right next to the Opera is Hilton Hanoi Opera hotel. The the half-round building was originally attached to the opera. We watch a photo shooting for child's clothing before we make our way back. ....... Weitere Infos im Reisevideoblog: https://blog.myvideomedia.com
